“Classes” in Session: Understanding Different Ebike Speeds

Not all ebikes are created equal… but they are all a blast.

Some give you a gentle boost. Some let you cruise without pedaling. And some? Well, let’s just say they can help turn your commute into the best part of the day.

That’s where ebike classes come in. Don’t worry, though, they’re much simpler than they sound, and no studying is required.

Just three categories that help explain how your ride works (and how wide the grin on your face may get).

Let’s Count to Three

Think of ebike classes like coffee orders: the same base, only with different levels of kick.

Class 1: Pedal assist only. Produces a gentle boost, reaching speeds up to 20 mph.

Class 2: Choice of pedal assist or throttle. Allows cruising speeds that reach up to 20 mph.

Class 3: Pedal assist only (typically). Reaches speeds up to 28 mph.

Now, let’s break down each of these further.

Class 1: The Helpful Boost

If you want to pedal and have a more natural-feeling ride, only a little easier, then Class 1 is your jam.

Again, this class does not have a throttle and relies only on pedal assist to reach speeds up to 20 mph. It’s almost as if you grew legs of steel overnight.

Best for:

  • Scenic rides
  • Bike paths and trails
  • Managing hills and obstacles

Riders enjoy this option because it encourages movement, increases motivation, and feels the most like a traditional bike without the struggle.

Class 2: The Cruise Controller

Looking to get out and explore more without over-exerting yourself? Then you’re in luck because Class 2 is where rides become much more relaxed.

With this ebike option, you still have pedal-assist abilities, but also the choice to use a throttle. This means you can ride without pedaling whenever you choose and still reach up to 20 mph.

Best for:

  • Running errands
  • City riding
  • Riding without breaking a sweat

Class 2 ebikes are great for riders who want the best of both worlds. Whether it’s pedaling when you want or coasting when you don’t, the freedom to choose is in your hands!

Class 3: The Speed Seeker

If you’ve got places to be, people to see, or simply enjoy a little extra zip, Class 3 ebikes have you covered.

These ebikes are pedal-assist only (typically), but also provide more power, reaching speeds up to 28 mph.

Best for:

  • Commuting
  • Longer rides
  • Replacing short trips in a car
  • Mountain Biking

These ebikes are perfect for riders seeking a little more thrill and a quicker way to get to their everyday destinations.

Safety First

It’s important to note that ebike rules can vary depending on where you ride, especially for higher classes with increased speeds.

In general, most ebike motors in the U.S. max out at 750W, and some bike paths, trails, and roads only allow certain classes.

It’s always a good idea to check your local guidelines before heading out!

Which Gets You Buzzing?

At the end of the day, it’s not about the class. It’s about getting outside and enjoying the ride.

So whether you’re cruising, coasting, or picking up a little extra speed, the goal is the same.

Experiencing more fun, more freedom, and more reasons to keep riding.
